What's new on Hilton Head and in the lowcountry

Hilton Head Island has been a coastal destination of choice for decades, and it’s undergone a lot of changes over that time, but quite a few new developments of late continue to fan the desires of island getaway seekers near and far.

One of the biggest draws of Hilton Head is all its natural “Lowcountry” beauty and the outdoor coastal playground it provides. Now more than ever, outside is the place to be! Plus, with trends in the travel and leisure industry clearly showing vacationers wanting experiences–especially of the outdoor variety–Hilton Head continues to evolve with the times, and add to its active outdoor culture.

Lowcountry Celebration Park

One of the biggest additions came at the end of 2020 with the December grand opening of Hilton Head Island’s newest park, the Lowcountry Celebration Park off Pope Avenue. What was previously an undeveloped and overgrown area and retention pond behind the Coligny Beach parking lot has been transformed into a 10-acre park, playground and museum right along the island’s “Boulevard to The Beach.” This masterful stroke of urban planning has it all for kids and kids at heart!

A massive, ship-themed playground titled “The Adventure,” named for the vessel that explorer Captain William Hilton used to travel to Hilton Head Island in 1663, is the centerpiece. It even has fully functional cannons that shoot plumes of mist into the air which kids love to play in. Surrounding the playground is a water feature–to cool off and splash in–walking and jogging paths, plenty of planned green space for festivals, concerts and events, a stage, a children’s’ museum, restrooms, and tons of seating with large shade structures to keep you cool in the summer. The planners have truly thought of everything with the multi-level playground even having places to charge phones and electronics–not that anyone will be on them with all this fun under the sun to be had!

At its heart Celebration Park is a celebration of all that makes this place so unique and special. It’s just the latest addition on Hilton Head in this trend to satisfy vacation goers desire to be taking part in outdoor activities. Just a couple years ago the island also welcomed the new Shelter Cove Community Park right along the Broad river in the heart of the bustling retail and restaurant center of Shelter Cove. And just across the Intracoastal Waterway, Bluffton just christened Wright Family Park; a new waterfront park that is the ideal spot to take in the sunset along the May River. Located at the end of Calhoun Street in the center of Old Town Bluffton the serene setting features a boardwalk, open space and public access to the May River.

Outside experiences

Again, these amazing new outdoor activity centers are signs of the times, and reflect both what vacationers want as well as what makes Hilton Head and The Lowcountry so outdoor-centric. The number of outside experiences to be had in this coastal paradise is too long to list but here are a few you might want to indulge in on your next visit! Stroll or bike the beach, fish from the shore or on a chartered boat, tee it up on championship golf courses as well as mini golf, dine al fresco by the water, kayak, parasail, jet ski, zip line, or just sit back, relax and soak in the Southern charm and island life.
