The Town of Hilton Head Island's 2026 Beach Renourishment Project began on August 6, 2025 at Fish Haul Beach, located off Mitchelville Road on the Island's north end. This vital initiative, part of the Town's long-term beach management program, is undertaken every 8 to 10 years and aims to preserve, protect, and restore Hilton Head's valuable shoreline.
The 2026 renourishment will mirror past efforts (1990, 1997, 2006, 2016) and involves placing approximately 2.2 million cubic yards of beach-compatible sand across 46,500 feet of Atlantic Ocean and Port Royal Sound shoreline. Sand will be dredged from offshore shoals and pumped through extensive pipeline systems onto designated beach areas, then shaped by heavy machinery to meet specific design standards.
The $47.5 million project is divided into three phases, with work expected to last until May 2026:

During the renourishment, about 1,000-foot beach segments will be temporarily closed, with beachgoers directed around active work zones via ramps and signage. Construction is expected to proceed 24/7, moving at a pace of 200-300 feet per day, with minor disruptions lasting just a few days for any specific beachfront property

The project includes safeguards for endangered species. Activities are monitored by consultants to protect sea turtles and migratory shorebirds. Per U.S. Army Corps and USFWS permit conditions, dog activity is restricted in a small area adjacent to Fish Haul Creek Beach Park. All other beaches remain under normal seasonal pet access rules.

Over the years, I've stayed in many villas up and down Ocean Lane (Palmetto Dunes), and this one was by far the best. Captains Walk has three buildings, all of which face the ocean directly. This particular unit is on the first floor, with a sort set of stairs down to your own walkway that leads to both the beach ramp and the pool area. No need to use the elevator, ever. The view is lovely, over a small dune and out to the ocean. It's an end unit, on the north side of the complex, so very private. Fully renovated, nice furnishings, great lighting, and beautiful window coverings. I could not have asked for more. You'll love it, so book it now with no worries whatsoever! Parking is a breeze as well. There is ramp from the parking lot that leads directly to your front door. What could be better?Posted: 2/16/2025

The home was very comfortable, cozy, and well decorated. We found everything that we needed within the home. Clean, large spaces, and located right in front of the beach. We were able to be on the beach within minutes. We even enjoyed the deer that came on the dunes between the home and the ocean. It was easy to pick up. Our extended family has stayed at many beach condos, and this is absolutely one of the best. This unit being on the ground floor and on the corner gives you privacy and seclusion. The convenience of avoiding elevators and having a very short walk to the beach and pool can't be overstated. The unit was very clean and the beach was not at all crowded.
